Foyle Maritime Festival — Tall Ships, Music and Rain in Derry

When Derry Turns into One Big Festival

We didn’t come to Derry just for its historic walls, fascinating landmarks and complicated past. Another reason for our visit was the Foyle Maritime Festival — an event that transformed the banks of the River Foyle into a lively, colourful celebration.

And one thing quickly became clear: Derry certainly knows how to have a good time!

The waterfront was lined with stalls, food trucks and all sorts of attractions. Delicious smells drifted through the air, music carried across the crowds, and street performers seemed to appear around every corner.

There was a Ferris wheel, live bands, comedians and even a fire eater. In other words, something for just about everyone.

As for us, we found plenty of excuses to stop every few metres and take another photograph. 🤣

Music, Food and Weather with a Mind of Its Own

The festival waterfront had a rhythm all of its own.

Some visitors came for the music, others for the food, while plenty were simply enjoying a leisurely stroll along the river.

Families wandered between attractions, musicians entertained the crowds, and we moved from one interesting sight to another.

Of course, there was one particularly enthusiastic participant in the festivities: Northern Ireland’s weather.

One day brought sunshine, blue skies and something remarkably close to a proper summer atmosphere.

The next delivered dark clouds, umbrellas and rain that apparently had no intention of missing the festival.

Nobody seemed particularly surprised.

After all, this is Northern Ireland. Around here, an umbrella can be just as essential as your wallet. 🤣☔

Tall Ships, Yachts and an Old Friend

But let’s not forget — this was, first and foremost, a maritime festival.

Along the waterfront, yachts, sailing ships and other vessels were moored for visitors to admire.

Tall masts, tangled rigging and wooden decks created a completely different atmosphere from the bustling food stalls and music stages.

Among the vessels, we spotted a familiar sight.

Andaluzja!

Now, there’s a ship we already know!

We had previously come across her in Warrenpoint, so seeing her again in Derry was a lovely surprise.

I’m beginning to suspect that Andaluzja shares our favourite hobby — wandering from port to port to see what’s happening.

The only difference is that she probably has a much better view along the way! 🤣

A little further along, visitors could take a closer look at other vessels, their decks and equipment.

And there was certainly plenty of rope to admire.

Looking at the extraordinary maze of rigging, I came to a reassuring conclusion: I much prefer operating a camera.

At least I know what most of its buttons are supposed to do. 🤦‍♂️🤣

And the Rain? It Was Having a Great Time Too!

The funny thing is that the weather didn’t spoil the festival at all.

Quite the opposite, in fact.

Under heavy grey clouds, the sailing ships sometimes looked even more impressive than they had in bright sunshine.

People pulled on their jackets, opened their umbrellas and carried on enjoying themselves.

Over our two days at the festival, we only managed to experience a small part of everything on offer.

But it was more than enough to leave us with some wonderful memories.

The Foyle Maritime Festival revealed yet another side of Derry — a city that doesn’t just tell stories about its remarkable and often turbulent history, but also knows how to enjoy the present.

And if it rains along the way?

Well…

Without a little rain, it probably wouldn’t feel like a proper festival in this part of the world! 🤣🌧️
