TEMPLARS – HISTORY, LEGENDS AND THE GREATEST PR CAMPAIGN OF THE MIDDLE AGES
SERIES HUB | History & Stories
“The Templars did not leave behind an empire. They left something far more enduring – questions that people have been trying to answer in their own way for over seven hundred years.”
Vagabonds of the North
Introduction
If the Middle Ages had a marketing department, the Templars would probably still be running it today.
They began as a small group of knights tasked with protecting pilgrims travelling to the Holy Land. Over time, they built an organisation that stretched across Europe, managing estates, trade routes, logistics and finances. Kings borrowed money from them, pilgrims entrusted them with their wealth, and Europe’s most powerful rulers sought their favour.
Then it all came crashing down.
Arrests. Trials. Accusations. Executions.
And that is precisely when the story we still tell today truly began.
Because the Templars’ greatest power was never their castles, horses or treasure.
It was their legend.
In this series, we will not be digging for the Holy Grail beneath every stone, nor will we attempt to solve every mystery of the medieval world. We will not tell anyone what to believe.
Instead, we will do something far more interesting.
We will ask why, more than seven hundred years after their disappearance, the Knights Templar still capture our imagination.
Because perhaps the story of the Templars tells us as much about ourselves as it does about the Middle Ages.
WHAT IS THIS SERIES ABOUT?
This is not a story about knights.
This is not a story about wars.
In fact, it is not even really a story about the Templars.
It is a story about:
- faith and power,
- money and politics,
- legends and propaganda,
- mysteries and human imagination,
- and why some stories simply refuse to die.
Along the way, we will explore whether a person living in the twenty-first century is truly so different from someone living in the twelfth.
PART I – in preparation
Knights, Monks, and a Twenty-First-Century Corporation Hidden in the Twelfth Century
How did a small group of knights become one of the most influential organizations in medieval Europe?
We will explore the origins of the Order, its structure, its daily operations, and the financial system that many historians view as a precursor to modern banking.
Because long before mobile apps, debit cards, and online banking, there were the Templars.
Key themes:
- the birth of the Order,
- the daily life of a Templar knight,
- the first international financial network,
- medieval logistics and security.
PART II – in preparation
Friday the 13th—The Day That Created a Legend
Few historical events have left such a lasting mark on popular culture as the fall of the Templars.
We will examine the conflict between the Order and King Philip IV of France, the controversial trials, and the events that ultimately led to the dissolution of the Order.
Was it justice?
Political revenge?
Or something in between?
Key themes:
- Philip IV and his debts,
- the arrests of October 13th, 1307,
- the trials and accusations,
- the birth of one of Europe’s greatest legends.
PART III – in preparation
Treasure, the Grail, and Other Things Nobody Ever Seems to Find
This is where history and legend begin to overlap.
We will explore stories surrounding:
- the Holy Grail,
- the Ark of the Covenant,
- the lost Templar fleet,
- hidden treasures,
- Scottish and Portuguese legends.
We will not attempt to prove anything.
We will not attempt to debunk anything.
Instead, we will ask why these stories have captivated human imagination for centuries.
PART IV – in preparation
Templars versus the Internet
What do medieval rumors and social media virals have in common?
More than you might think.
This chapter explores how legends, narratives, and propaganda are created and sustained.
Technology has changed.
People, perhaps, not so much.
Key themes:
- medieval fake news,
- chroniclers versus influencers,
- propaganda then and now,
- How legends are born.
PART V – in preparation
Why Are We Still Looking for Them?
The final chapter will be the least about the Templars.
And the most about us.
Because perhaps for seven hundred years we have not been searching for the Order itself.
Perhaps we have been searching for:
- mystery,
- adventure,
- answers,
- and the hope that something extraordinary might be waiting around the next bend in the road.
This will be the most Vagabonds-style chapter of the entire series.
THE VAGABONDS' PERSPECTIVE
The more our world fills with artificial intelligence, automation, and digital technology, the more we hear that we live in the most advanced age in human history.
And perhaps we do.
But it is worth looking back from time to time.
Because when you strip away smartphones, satellites, and fiber-optic cables, you discover that people have been asking the same questions for centuries.
- About power.
- About wealth.
- About meaning.
- About truth.
- About mystery.
Perhaps the most significant difference between us and the Templars is not who we are.
Perhaps it is simply the tools we use.
“Perhaps the greatest treasure of the Templars was never gold. Perhaps it was a story that still inspires people to set out on a journey seven centuries later.”
