Ring of Cooley — the day trip after which you’re no longer entirely sure you returned from the same dimension

Ravensdale Stone Circle
Have we actually found ourselves in the ancient Circle of Witches?

There are trips where you come home with a fridge magnet.

And then there are the ones where you come home wondering whether you may have accidentally disturbed the local balance between the living world and something considerably older.

The Cooley Peninsula belongs firmly in the second category.

It was supposed to be a calm day out.

A few views.
A short walk.
Maybe a Guinness.
Nothing dramatic.

As usual.

It began with a prehistoric portal older than most civilisations.

Then came a stone circle hidden in a forest where you instinctively lower your voice.

Somewhere along the way, there was a legend about a giant woman, medieval Carlingford, a Norman castle, fish & chips, and Guinness deployed in the name of field research.

And then we learned that one of Ireland’s greatest legends is essentially a full-scale war caused by… a bull.

Naturally.

For dessert, Piotr and I walked through a portal to the Otherworld.

There and back.

At least… we think so.

Because if Ireland has its famous scenic routes…

Then Cooley might just be its most suspiciously underrated ring.

And honestly?

It may well be one of the best day trips on the island.

“If Ireland is made of rings of adventure, Cooley might be one of its best-kept secrets.”
