SERIES: KING JOHN’S CASTLE
After a few weeks off, during which we wandered the USA, Mexico, and the twists and turns of the human mind, we returned to Ireland. Our return begins with a bang. We’re in Limerick, Republic of Ireland, home to one of Ireland’s most famous buildings. King John’s Castle is a landmark that deserves special treatment. So we’ve given it special treatment. A large three-part entry in the Historic Places section. We’re revealing a place with a special status in history, a place where, as if in a crystal ball, the history of all of Ireland has been captured.
“Every castle has a beginning. This one started in chaos.”
Part I
King John’s Castle didn’t begin as a tourist attraction with panoramic views and smiling visitors. Long before the castle rose above the River Shannon, Vikings had already made Limerick a place worth fighting for. This is where the story begins.

Part II
If walls could file trauma reports, King John’s Castle would need an entire archive. Sieges, starvation, political betrayal, and enough artillery to ruin anyone’s week—welcome to the darkest chapter of Limerick.

Part III
Ghosts? Maybe. Dark history? Absolutely. From Viking remains beneath the castle to centuries of blood, ambition, and whispered stories, King John’s Castle still knows how to unsettle visitors.
